Vietnam Fish Export: 2026 Sourcing FAQ

1. Is it true that some Vietnamese fish is currently banned from the US?

There is a partial ban under the 2026 MMPA, but it only affects specific "flagged" gear types and fisheries. At Global Food Asia, we’ve already cleared our supply chain with NOAA. We provide the mandatory Certificate of Admissibility (COA) for every shipment, so your Tuna or Mackerel won't get stuck in a "supply vacuum" at the port.

2. Why have Pangasius (Basa) prices hit record highs this month?

You’ve probably seen farm-gate prices hit 35,000 VND/kg in the Mekong Delta this March. This is due to a massive fingerling shortage and a 145,000-ton global whitefish gap. Because we secured our harvest early, we can still offer you stable FOB Ho Chi Minh City pricing while other suppliers are struggling to find fish.

3. How are you handling the new EU -18°C Tuna rules?

As of January 27, 2026, the EU is rejecting any tuna for direct consumption that wasn't brine-frozen at a strict -18°C core temperature. We’ve already upgraded our processing to meet these new "Anti-Fraud" standards. You get the full temperature logs and lab reports for histamine levels before the container even leaves Vietnam.

4. How do the new 15% US tariffs affect my landing cost?

With the new 15% tariff that started on February 24, 2026, landing costs are up across the board. To help our US partners stay competitive, we are shifting more of our production to Value-Added cuts (pre-portioned, retail-ready). These often qualify for better duty classifications and save you the high cost of local US processing labor.

5. Can I still get shipments out during the March/April port congestion?

Port congestion is real right now due to the new 2026 compliance checks. However, we use Priority Booking with major lines like Maersk and MSC. By having your Technical Regulation Conformity paperwork ready 7 days before loading, we ensure your fish stays in the cold chain and on the water, not sitting on a hot dock at Cat Lai.
