Questions about buying frozen shrimp

Yes. Vannamei is also called whiteleg shrimp or Pacific white shrimp. Its scientific name is Litopenaeus vannamei. When requesting a quotation, specify the product form and size as well as the species.

They are different species: Vannamei is whiteleg shrimp, while Black Tiger is Penaeus monodon. Neither is automatically the better choice. The right option depends on your required size, presentation, intended use and budget. We can check both against your specification.

The numbers describe the count within a specified weight. For example, 16/20 means 16–20 shrimp per pound or kilogram, depending on the specification. U10 means fewer than 10. Always confirm the weight unit, product form and whether the count is measured before or after removing the ice glaze.

Glaze is the protective ice coating around frozen shrimp. Net shrimp weight excludes that coating. A pack weighing 1 kg including glaze, with 800 g of shrimp, contains 800 g net product. Confirm the net weight and how the glaze percentage is calculated before comparing offers.

HOSO means head-on, shell-on; HLSO means headless, shell-on; PD means peeled and deveined; and PDTO means peeled and deveined with the tail left on. These describe the product form. Raw or cooked condition and freezing method should be specified separately.

Size alone does not make two offers equivalent. Species, origin, processing, glaze, added-water treatments, packing and delivery terms can all affect the price. We compare quotations against the same requirements so you can understand what each offer includes.
